Karen Hendricks, J.D.
Karen M. Hendricks holds a Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law (1979) and an A.B. from Mount Holyoke College (1976). Since 1992, she has been an Assistant Director in the Department of Federal Affairs for the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, she is responsible for the legislative activities for five pediatric academic research and adolescent medicine societies (Ambulatory Pediatric Association, American Pediatric Society; Society for Pediatric Research, Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs, and the Society for Adolescent Medicine). Karen is the immediate past president of the Coalition for Health Funding, a member of the Executive Committees of the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Funding and the Friends of NICHD and participates in and has held leadership roles in a number of other health care advocacy coalitions and collaborations in Washington, D.C.
In the greater Washington metropolitan community Karen has served as chair of the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (1998 -1999). During her tenure she was responsible for the hiring of a new CEO/President of the affiliate. She also served on the North Atlantic/Eastern Region Nominating Committee for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Ms. Hendricks is a past President of the Board of Directors of the YWCA of the National Capital Area. During her tenure as president (1991 - 1993) Karen was responsible for overseeing the renovations and re-opening of the YWCA/NCA facility, the streamlining and more effective management of the board of directors including revising the by-laws. She was also involved in a number of community activities and functions, working in collaboration with other not-for-profit organizations such as the Junior League and Wider Opportunity for Women. She is the recipient of the YWCA/NCA's Josephine H. Kyles Award (1993), the Leadership Award (1995) and the President's Award (1995).
From 2000-2003 Karen served as the president of the Alumnae Association of Mount Holyoke College and a member of the Board of Trustees of the College. Previously, she served on the Nominating Committee of the Alumnae Association, the Nomination of Alumnae Trustees Committee and the Sesquicentennial Awards Committee. Karen received the Alumnae Medal of Honor in 2003 and the Alumnae Association's Mary Lyon Distinguished Alumnae Award in 1990.
Karen is currently a member of the board of directors of Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and the Nurse - Family Partnership. |
